What is Rice?

History

There are several versions about the origin of the first rice crop, but among historians, the most popular designate China as the first country to develop the cultivation of this crop, while recognizing that it was India where it was first discovered in the wild.
The development of various trade routes that go from Asia to other parts of the world led to the expansion of cultivation, and the same grain was used as a bargaining chip. Rice arrived in the Mediterranean 350 years before the birth of Jesus Christ.
The Arabs introduced rice on the Spanish coast, around the eighth century of our era. In fact, the origin of the name, as we know it today comes word of Arabic origin “ar-Rozz.”

Varieties

There are about ten thousand varieties of rice .The majority of rice is “polished” before releasing them to cover that protects them (which becomes bran), which eliminates enzymes and oils and rice. The result is a grain of rice remains stable for months.
The most common varieties: Bomba, Carnaroli, Basmati, Bahia, Albufera, Senia … among others.

Properties

Rice is a valuable energy source rich in carbohydrates and low in fat. Unlike other grains, rice contains no gluten and is therefore suitable for use by those who have some celiac disease.
In our times rice has become an indispensable food in our daily diet. Moreover, if we consider that is the most consumed cereal in the world after wheat, which gives the world’s population more than 50% of the calories present in their food.
